Subject Choice: Grades 8 and 9

The following learning areas are offered as prescibed by the Education Department:

Group 3 Mathematics
Group 4 Social Sciences
Group 5 Technology
Group 6 Natural Sciences
Group 7 Arts and Culture
Group 8 Economic and Management Sciences
Group 9 Life Orientation

Subject Choice from Grade 10 onwards

One subject must be chosen from each of the following groups. The same subject may not be taken twice. Combination rules apply.

  • The school reserves the right to change the subject choice if there is insufficient demand for some of the subjects or choices.
  • There is no guarantee that a learner will be able to change a subject after the timetable for a year has been finalised.

Combination Rules

  • Only one subject must be chosen from each group.
  • The same subject may not be taken twice.
  • Learners must take at least one language on Home Language level.
  • Learners may, in exceptional cases, and with the permission of the Languages department, take both languages on Home Language level.
  • Learners who want to take Physical Sciences and/or Information Technology, must take Mathematics.
  • Mathematics is recommended for learners who want to take Accounting.
  • Learners may not take both Information Technology and Computer Applications Technology.
  • Learners who receive special permission may take Visual Arts, Design, Dance or Drama as an eighth subject.

Admission to a University

The minimum admission requirement for a B-degree at a university is the following:
A National Senior Certificate in which the learner has achieved a rating of 4 (50-59%) or better in at least four subjects from the following list (as applicable to our school):

Business Studies
Accounting

Important:
A Higher Education institution may also require an appropriate level of achievement in specified subjects for admission to some courses.
These requirements are not applicable for admission to Universities of Technology (previously Technikons) or Colleges.
